What Exactly Does it Take to be a Lifeguard?
Summer jobs, part-time jobs, and outdoor jobs are typically the most coveted among teenagers and young adults. There’s one occupation that satisfies all of those requirements: lifeguarding. The caveat: It’s not so easy. Lifeguards play a huge role in the community, providing safety and efficiency on beaches and public pools. If you’re wondering if you have what it takes, read below:
1. Grit
Lifeguards work hard and don’t complain about their jobs. Some days are long and uneventful, and others are stressful and fast-paced. A great lifeguard realizes the importance of his or her job and takes it seriously no matter what.
2. Foresight
You never know what you’re going to get as a lifeguard—and you have to be ready for anything the beach/pool throws your way. Having good foresight is an important part of the job, as you’ll need to look out for anything that could cause an accident or potential harm.
3. Passion
Most importantly, lifeguards are passionate about what they do. It’s a competitive field, so it’s critical that you’re passionate about saving lives and making a difference. This enthusiasm will get you through the training, the hard days, and stressful incidents that may come up while you’re on the job.
Think you have what it takes? We do too! Although lifeguarding can be intense, it’s an incredibly rewarding job—and it’s much more than just a summer hobby or high school job!
