Top Three Spooky Facts About Lifeguarding in Florida
Happy Halloween! In honor of this fun fall holiday, we decided to share some of our favorite spooky facts about being a lifeguard in Florida. Lifeguarding is different from state to state, and we’ve had the pleasure of working with all kinds of different Florida-based lifeguards. After all, we’re surrounded by water—there’s a big lifeguard family here in the sunshine state.
1. Florida beaches are known for producing big waves. That’s what brings so many surfers to this state! One of the spots with the biggest waves in Florida is Reef Road in Palm Beach, where waves get larger than 15 feet in height. Good thing we’re equipped with skilled lifeguards to patrol the beaches with waves this massive.
2. In 2019 alone there have been approximately 18 shark attacks in Florida. This number accounts for what has been observed, so there could be more. Either way, it’s a spooky thought that you could be surfing near a shark. Be sure to read up on shark safety before surfing or venturing out into the ocean.
3. As beach pollution continues to rise, it has a serious effect on the state of Florida. Lifeguards are always encouraged to pick up trash, and you are, too! Remember: This planet is your home. Treat it with care!
