Water Safety Tips for Swimmers at Summer Camp
If you have summer camp plans — or if you have a child planning to attend summer camp — there’s a good chance water will be involved. Whether it’s a lake, beach, or pool, summer camp water safety is slightly different because the space is packed with young people. Keep reading for our safety tips.
Tip 1: Be aware of your surrounding swimmers.
At camp, you’re typically clustered with other campers — so there’s a higher chance of bumping into each other if you aren’t paying attention. If you’re doing a lot of underwater swimming, you’ll want to invest in a pair of goggles to avoid swimming directly into people.
Tip 2: Wear sunscreen.
This tip goes for any type of swimmer. Summer camp usually means a lot of outdoor time — whether in or out of the water. When you’re having fun and playing games, it’s easy to forget how much time you spend in the sun. Lather up!
Tip 3: Drink water, but not just any water.
If you’re swimming in a body of water, you may be tempted to drink right from the source. Natural sources of water aren’t always sanitary, so be sure to only drink water that is filtered and clean.
Tip 4: Talk to your lifeguard if you have a problem.
No problem is too small or big for your lifeguard. If you have a concern related to your safety in or near the water, go straight to your lifeguard — even if you’re closer to your camp counselor. Your lifeguard is there to jump in on problems before they escalate, and they’ll know what to do to turn your safety concern into happy swimming.
