Is Lifeguarding Stress Real?
Have you ever heard of lifeguarding stress? If you haven’t, good for you! But if you have, don’t worry. Stress happens to all kinds of people in all kinds of professions. The important thing is that you know how to deal with it — and luckily, we’re here to help.
1. Know your team
Being a lifeguard means being part of a team. Get to know your team so you can trust them and they can trust you. This will be important when you need to communicate, get your shift covered, or ask for help when you need it.
2. Form a good relationship with your manager
When things get stressful, it’s important to have a leader you can look up to. Get to know your manager and form a relationship that makes you feel comfortable talking to them about your job and responsibilities. If you’re starting to take on too many, you may want to talk to your manager about reallocating your workload.
3. Hydrate and eat
When you’re working in the sun and you’re moving around a lot, you need to reserve time to hydrate and eat. Lifeguarding stress can be onset by physical needs that aren’t being fulfilled. That means taking your lunch breaks, bringing snacks, and filling up your water bottle for every shift.
So, is lifeguarding stress real? Absolutely. Is it preventable? Yes! As long as you check in with your physical and mental health and always communicate with your team, you can keep lifeguarding stress at bay and enjoy doing the job you love.
