Ways to prepare for your first day as a lifeguard
First day jitters? It’s normal — it happens to all of us. When you’re getting ready for your first day as a lifeguard, there are a few things to keep in mind. We’ve got you covered.
1. Stay calm
You’re about to enter into an environment of uncertainty. The weather is uncertain, people are uncertain, and the nature of your job is — you guessed it — uncertain. But that’s okay! That’s why you signed up to be a lifeguard… because you’re ready to tackle the unknown and do it well. For your first day, stay cool, calm and collected — stressing won’t help.
2. Ask questions
While you’re training or shadowing a mentor, ask as many questions as you can think of. No question is silly, and it’s important that you’re diligent when you’re still in a learning period. At some point, you’ll be running the show — so get all those questions out in the open early on.
3. Come prepared
Showing up empty-handed is a no-no! Make sure you’re prepared with the right uniform, first aid kit and lifeguard supplies. Your manager might tell you what to bring and wear ahead of time. If not, send them an email the week before your start date so you can pack whatever they may require of you.
4. Have fun
You should take your job seriously, but that doesn’t mean you have to be a serious person. Lifeguards like to have a good time, just like anyone else. Have fun and enjoy the process of learning and growing in your career as a lifeguard.
