First things first. What is USCG-approved?
Great question. USCG stands for the United States Coast Guard. To get this approval, a patented product needs to:
Comply with the relevant requirements in the regulations
Successfully complete the specified tests
Be enrolled in quality control or follow-up program as required
To ensure approval, the Coast Guard puts technical and testing requirements in place. Once the tests are passed, the Coast Guard issues a formal approval certificate with a number that validates the manufacturer’s USCG-approved product.
So, it’s approved. What next?
Once a product is officially approved the respective manufacturer receives a Certificate of Approval. That certificate is valid for five years, and the approved product will be listed on the CGMIX (the Coast Guard Marine Information Exchange). If the product is changed or tweaked in any way, the changes need to be evaluated and approved by the USCG. That could mean additional testing, depending on the scope of the changes. Five years after approval, manufacturers will need to work with the USCG again to get another Certificate of Approval.
